Boston to Los Angeles Road Trip Advice

We are two Australian friends who are planning to drive from Boston to L.A.. We hope to see lots of National Parks and not so many cities (not our first US trip) and be on the road for about 4 weeks. I'd love to get advice on how to rent car and do this as foreigners. And how to save money on accommodation $$$.

Have you thought about flying to LA and then visiting some NP's nearby? I say this as it very ambitious to drive from Boston to LA, its a long trip!
