I want to volunteer in south east Asia but I don't want to pay

Is this possible? I don't have deep pockets and some prices are outrageous for supposed volunteering. Anything free/cheap available? Open to destinations - Thailand, Cambodia, Bali etc.

If anyone knows any free or very cheap opportunities in Borneo, Malaysia/Indonesia let me know. I'm in the same boat as you, it is my dream to help orangutans but as a poor broke student I'm really struggling to see how to afford it when you account flights, accommodation and programs.
