Is a gap year easy to do?

I think I'll take one after uni in a couple of years, but it is easy to do for someone who has never done this before? I haven't been backpacking as such before, but I'm planning to do Camp America next year.

It will be my first time going abroad by myself too so I'm looking at going with a company and doing a working holiday.
