Should I go backpacking to Mexico or Costa Rica?
Both countries appeal, is there much difference with costs and safety? I'll be backpacking solo and know a little Spanish so hopefully that won't be an issue. I imagine Costa Rica is cheaper but I then saw some people say it is really expensive?

Go to Costa Rica, Mexico really isn't safe right now especially outside of the tourism hub of Cancun. Costa Rica isn't cheap, but it is very safe and there are so many places to go. You could volunteer, learn to surf etc.
I loved the east coast of Mexico - Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum. You can also cross down into Guatemala to see the Tikal ruins which I loved. Mexico is a huge country so its probably best you see what appeals to you.
