Tips for Planning a Family Gap Year

Hello! I'm just new here and recently I've had a keen interest on a travelling the world with my husband and 2 kids. I'm Australian and my husband is British. Our kids are currently 4, 7 and 8. We are thinking of embarking this wonderful adventure in 3-4 years time just before our eldest child starts high school.

We would love to explore living in countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Canada. I assume staying in Toronto, Canada for 3 weeks would be expensive and would like to find how much we should budget for and suggestions for accommodation.

If budget permits, we would like to pop into Europe and see some relatives. We would also like to stay in Nepal, and maybe Morocco for 1-2 weeks each. These visits would be like our "holiday".

Also I'd like to know:
1. If any families out there kept their family home and rent it out during the year.
2. Did you keep anything in storage?
3. Did you buy your flights along the way or a RTW trip?
4. Ideal areas to live in Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
5. Is Thailand worth living in?
6. What do families do during the whole time?

I apologise if these questions have been answered in other threads. Happy to just get some links instead. Thanks!!

Hi Shannon,

Wow this sounds like a really brave/fun experience, but the questions are quite specific/unique so this is probably why there have been no replies.

I guess in answer to your questions, you could rent your house out whilst away and put belongings in storage - depending how long you plan to be away and if you need the funds from this to pay a mortgage/fund your trip. I would recommend Thailand as the perfect place to live, its safe, modern and affordable. Regarding location this really depends on what you want - a big city, or a relaxing island. There are so many things you can do, from working, volunteering, sightseeing but again this depends on yours and your kids interests.

Also I know you probably have, but have you considered how it might impact your kids education and routine?
