What to Pack for India

India is an amazing country to visit, but it requires a little more preparation than other destinations.

This country is there are so many unique experiences available, from exploring on a backpacking adventure, touring the country or joining an India gap year program. What you pack really comes down to what time of your your visiting, what you’ll be doing and how long you will be staying.

Here is our suggested packing list to give you idea for what to take.

Luggage

Luggage should be restricted to a frameless backpack, which must not weigh more than 20kgs (ideal – 15kg). We recommend a backpack over a suitcase for ease of transportation.

• Student ID
• Copies of Passport, Visa and Insurance (better still, scan these and email it to your web-based email account for access anywhere in the world)

• Travel umbrella/thin raincoat
• Sun Hat (summer)
• Sunglasses (summer)

• Student ID (if applicable)
• Electrical adapters
• Ear Plugs
• Ladies should bring a headscarf as it is required in all churches, mosques and temples

Clothes and Footwear

• Underwear/socks
• Swimwear
• Long trousers and jog pants for lounging around the train
• Sweaters/Jumpers
• Shorts (summer)
• T-shirts and Long sleeved T-Shirts
• Warm jacket, hat, scarf and gloves in winter

• 1 Waterproof/windproof jacket
• Solid shoes with ridged sole
• Trainers
• If trekking or travelling in winter, hard soled boots are a MUST

• Sun cream
• Insect repellant

• Plasters/Bandage/Steri-Strips
• Antiseptic
• Blister pads
• Pain killers
• Diarrhorea remedies
• Moisturiser/after sun cream/lip balm
• Any prescription medication required
• Contact lenses and solution
• Cold/flu decongestants

• Travel motion-sickness tablets (i.e. natural ginger tablets)
• Contraceptives
• Tampons
• Tweezers
• Rehydration salts (Gastrolyte)

Don’y worry if you forget anything, all that you need is available at a low price in places like Bangalore.
You also don’t need to bring too many clothes as the Indian dresses are the most appropriate and comfortable to live, work and integrate yourself in the local population (What, we suggest you is to bring clothes enough for 2 weeks and not more).
